IMB: Annual Piracy Report - 2021

International Maritime Bureau's annual piracy and armed robbery against ships report

OF NOTE: Piracy and maritime armed robbery incidents are classified separately. Piracy acts occur in international waters, while maritime armed robberies occur within territorial waters.

Please refer to the Piracy - Best Management Practices (BMP) for guidance on anti-piracy measures. For location-specific versions, look for BMP West Africa or BMP Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea.

Additionally, for a general guide, click here for the Global Counter Piracy Guidance for Companies, Masters and Seafarers, or contact us for a consultation.

For a Mexican adaptation of the BMP (in Spanish), please see the MEJORES PRÁCTICAS PARA DISUADIR EL ROBO A MANO ARMADA EN LA SONDA DE CAMPECHE. This document is specific for pirate and maritime armed robbers in the Gulf of Campeche, where maritime crime has increased significantly over the last three years. Of note, cases in Mexico are not seen in the report because most happen within Mexican international waters and the EEZ.

COMMENT

This annual report highlights some importants characteristics of modern piracy, for example:

  • Anchored vessels are particularly vulnerable targets for pirates
  • While SE Asia is still the major hotspot for piracy, South America is quickly seeing an increase in pirate attacks.
  • Kidnappings are becoming less and less common
