MSC/IMO Annual Piracy Report - 2020

The Maritime Safety Committee/International Maritime Organization annual report on acts of piracy and maritime armed robbery

IMO REPORTING

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the United Nations agency responsible for the safety and security of shipping.

The IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) produces annual (incidents received between 1 January and 31 December) reports/summaries of actual and attempted attacks by pirates and armed robbers against ships. Reporting is based on data and information submitted by IMO Member Governments and regional and international organizations.

OF NOTE: Piracy and maritime armed robbery incidents are classified separately in the report. Piracy acts occur in international waters, while maritime armed robberies occur within territorial waters.

For a Mexican adaptation of the BMP (in Spanish), please see the MEJORES PRÁCTICAS PARA DISUADIR EL ROBO A MANO ARMADA EN LA SONDA DE CAMPECHE. This document is specific for pirate and maritime armed robbers in the Gulf of Campeche, where maritime crime has increased significantly over the last three years. Of note, cases in Mexico are not seen in the report because most happen within Mexican international waters and the EEZ.
