REPORT

ACADEMIC INTELLIGENCE

Even though universities have special research departments with analysts and former intelligence professionals, they are not considered private intelligence agencies (PIA), but rather research institutions.

A PIA is a private sector or quasi-non-government organization whose sole goal is to collect, analyze, and exploit information. These can rely on anything from SIGINT, HUMINT, OSINT, and IMINT.

While a university might also generate intelligence from passive collecting, many from OSINT heavily rely on official reporting of PIA, government sources, and NGOs. Ultimately, this makes university research on analysis and security highly reliable and impartial.
