The Government of Mexico and UNODC have over the past years worked to reduce poppy planting in the country by implementing vital programs such as the "MEXK54 Project "Monitoring System for Illicit Plantations in the Mexican Territory."
The 2022 December 8 report is the fifth report released by the Mexican Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA), the Ministry of the Navy of Mexico (SEMAR), and the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR), with the accompaniment of the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) and the technical cooperation of UNODC.

All findings and estimates are acquired through fusion intelligence with the strong support of satellite-based IMINT and are supported by the Global Illicit Crop Monitoring Program, which uses a transparent and reliable methodology that allows for the generation of internationally recognized figures.
The report shows that the main areas of concern are the remote and difficult-to-access zones of the states of Guerrero, Nayarit, Oaxaca, and the Golden Triangle (mountainous areas of Sinaloa, Chihuahua, and Durango).
